Servers carry the cross, the processional candles, hold the book for the priest celebrant when he is not at the altar, carry the incense and censer, present the bread, wine, and water to the priest during the preparation of the gifts or assist him when he receives the gifts from the people, wash the hands of the priest, assist the priest celebrant and deacon as necessary. When appropriate, a server may also ring a bell as a signal to the faithful.
Altar servers play an important role in the celebration of Holy Mass and are a valuable asset to the priests and the parish community. In committing to this ministry, altar servers truly participate in the Eucharist. They learn the order of the Mass, the aspects of the sanctuary and the various altar vessels used in the Mass.
Through altar serving roles, servers contribute to the Body of Christ present in our parish. They learn that each area of ministry in the Mass is vital, from the Ushers to the Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. They see their role as essential and learn the importance of both commitment and of service to others.
Through their ministry, altar servers have frequent interactions with our priests and deacons in a positive environment. If they are called to a religious vocation, altar serving will surely be a fundamental step in their journey. If they are called to family life, their experience as servers will help them to foster a love of our faith in their own children.
Altar servers must be at least seven (7) or older and have received the Sacraments of First Eucharist and Reconciliation. Additionally, we encourage the formation of adult teams and also invite parents to serve with their children.
Participants must attend two training sessions to learn how to assist during our liturgies. Training sessions are held periodically throughout the year. Please watch the parish bulletin for dates and times.
